How
to File a Property Claim
A
loss of personal or commercial property is a stressful and time-consuming
event. At SGI CANADA, our years of experience will minimize your headaches
when making a claim. These easy to follow steps will ensure you get back
to your normal schedule as quickly as possible.
If
you have suffered a property loss (anything you own besides a vehicle or
part of a vehicle), immediately call your SGI CANADA broker. Your broker
has all the information about your insurance coverage and will record the
details of the claim youre filing.
If
you have insurance with SGI CANADA, your broker will report your claim
to us immediately.
If
your property has been damaged, you should take steps right away to prevent
further damage by covering broken windows, securing broken doors, etc. Taking
these extra steps will not hinder the settlement of your claim.
Also,
if your belongings have been damaged in a storm, you may have to cover
them or move them somewhere safe until the adjuster arrives.
An
adjuster will contact you to inspect the damage. In most cases you can expect
to hear from an adjuster the next day.
Dont
throw away any damaged property before your adjuster arrives. The adjuster
needs to see all the damage, so he or she can make an accurate calculation
of your loss.
Its
also a good idea to keep receipts of major purchases because it makes it
easy to determine the value of your belongings should they be damaged or
destroyed. Another good idea is to take photographs of your damaged property.
After
the loss of your property or belongings has been assessed, your adjuster
will advise you on how to get repairs completed and/or belongings replaced.
The
time it takes to settle your claim depends on how complicated it is. SGI
CANADA guarantees your claim will be settled as quickly as possible.
