How to file an auto claim

Recent changes to the traffic accident reporting system in Saskatchewan have simplified the process for drivers, but the issue of whether or not to report an accident to police is just part of filing an auto claim. To ensure a smooth claims process, it’s important that everyone involved in a collision takes the following steps.

“If you’ve been in an accident, the first step of a hassle-free claim happens at the scene of the collision,” says Bob Lundy, SGI’s Assistant Vice President of Claims. “Once the area is secure and everyone is safe, get the name, driver’s licence and licence plate number of the other driver.”

“It’s also very important to get the names and addresses of any witnesses. This may be crucial in determining who was responsible for the collision.”

To assist you in gathering this information, an Accident Report Form has been conveniently prepared for you in the back of SGI’s Driver’s Licences and Basic Auto Insurance handbook. The handbook contains important information for all drivers and easily fits in a vehicle’s glove box. Copies are available at any SGI motor licence issuing office.

As soon as you have all the necessary witness and driver information, call SGI’s Dial-a-Claim at the claims centre closest to your home. The claims centre will set up an appointment to have your vehicle damage assessed.

To speed up the process when you call Dial-a-Claim, Lundy recommends that you have the following information on hand: your driver’s licence, the vehicle registration and, if you have one, the policy number of any auto extension insurance.

Accidents must also be reported to police under any of the following circumstances:

• if the collision results in injury or death
• if it’s a hit and run
• if a driver is impaired
• if any of the vehicles involved have to be towed from the scene

If none of the above apply, the accident needs only to be reported to SGI.
