RoadSmart Report | June, 2006
Protecting your identity and personal information
As a result of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Canada and the United States have been working together to improve the quality, reliability and security of driver’s licences in North America.
Identity theft is becoming more common across North America. SGI is assisting with the protection of your identity by strengthening the checks completed when a driver’s licence is issued.
Effective April 2006, the type and number of documents that can be presented to establish identity to obtain a Saskatchewan photo ID card and driver’s licence have been reduced. This enhancement strengthens the integrity of the licence issuance process and aligns our process with other Canadian jurisdictions.
Customers must provide a minimum of two pieces of ID to verify the following three required data elements as indicated by an “X” in the table below:

“SGI is following national standards to establish and protect customers’ identities because a photo identity card is an increasingly important document that enables a person to qualify for a variety of services,” said Sandy Crighton, Manager of SGI’s Driver and Vehicle Safety Services. “Most people don’t think that their identity can be stolen in small town Saskatchewan, but we are seeing more and more people getting caught using other people’s identification.”
Each year the identification requirements will be reviewed and refined.
