SGI streamlines accident reporting

Getting into an accident is always an inconvenience, but soon the process for reporting an accident will be simplified.

Beginning in August, motorists will only have to report an accident to the police in the following circumstances:

• collisions involving bodily injury or death
• hit and run
• when a driver is impaired
• when one or more of the vehicles must be towed from the scene

All accidents not involving any of these factors can be directly reported to SGI.

These changes mean that only about 25 per cent of collisions will have to be reported to police.

This will free up valuable police resources that can be re-dedicated to higher priorities. It is estimated these reporting changes will make available the equivalent of 10 full-time police officers who can be used more effectively throughout the province. Eliminating a stop at the police station also means less red tape for motorists.

"SGI is working hard to improve customer service," said SGI President Larry Fogg. "The change in accident reporting cuts red tape, expanding one stop service for SGI's customers by making the claim process more convenient."

After all, getting in an accident is stressful enough. Getting back on the road shouldn’t be.
