RoadSmart Report | January, 2006

SGI reminds motorists to renew their photo ID cards
Once again, it’s time to smile!

Saskatchewan motorists whose photo ID card portions of their driver’s licences are set to expire in 2006 must get their photo retaken – otherwise they will be unable to legally operate a motor vehicle on a public road.

Safety tips for driving at night
Driving at night requires a different set of skills than driving during the day. Depth perception is much lower at night and vision is diminished. Drivers can also become drowsy which can dull concentration and slow reaction time - increasing the chances of being involved in a collision. However, there are a number of helpful tips you can follow to ensure your safety the next time you are out driving at night.

Changing the lighting in your vehicle
Some motorists have reported that the headlamps or auxiliary lamps of oncoming vehicles are too bright and are blinding them. If you have changed the bulbs or lenses, or added lamps to your vehicle, you may be driving a vehicle that is impairing the vision of other motorists – creating a potentially dangerous situation. Before changing or adding any forward-facing lamps, SGI asks you to consider the enclosed useful information.

Buyer beware – flood-damaged vehicles
Due to the hurricanes that ravaged the United States Gulf Coast this past year, many vehicles from that region are now flood-damaged beyond repair.

While SGI is not aware of any of these vehicles entering Saskatchewan, used vehicle buyers here should be aware there is a risk that flood-damaged vehicles will turn up in the Saskatchewan market.

RoadSmart Report is available on SGI’s web site at www.sgi.sk.ca. If you would like back issues, send your name and e-mail address to: jkoback@sgi.sk.ca.

RoadSmart Report is produced quarterly by the Communications department.
