SGI reminds motorists to renew their
photo ID cards

Once again, it’s time to smile!

Saskatchewan motorists whose photo ID card portions of their driver’s licences are set to expire in 2006 must get their photo retaken – otherwise they will be unable to legally operate a motor vehicle on a public road.

“We’re reminding those drivers that they need to visit their local SGI motor licence issuer to get their photos updated,” said Sandy Crighton, manager of SGI Driver and Vehicle Safety Services. “The process is easy, quick and free. So come on in and show us your smile again,” said Crighton, adding it’s important to have a current photo so authorities in and out of Saskatchewan accept your ID.

“It’s a good idea to have your photo ID card current, especially if you do a lot of traveling.”

The photo ID card is one of two parts that make up a Saskatchewan driver’s licence, which under national standards must be renewed every five years. The second part is a paper certificate, which must be renewed annually.

Letters in special envelopes will be sent to all drivers who must renew their photos in 2006. The special envelope is easy to spot with its slogan, “Once again, it’s time to smile!”

Getting a new photo is free, if it’s taken at the same time the paper certificate is renewed. It costs $25 a year to renew the certificate.

If a person wants to renew their photo ID before their paper certificate expires, it’ll cost him or her $10.

SGI began phasing in its new photo ID in 2001. About 120,000 drivers who had their photos taken that year will have to have them updated in 2006. SGI expects roughly the same number of photo ID renewals annually.

Saskatchewan has about 650,000 licensed drivers.

Safety tips for driving
at night

Driving at night requires a different set of skills than driving during the day.

Changing the lighting in your vehicle
Some motorists have reported that the headlamps or auxiliary lamps of oncoming vehicles are too bright and are blinding them.

Buyer beware – flood-damaged vehicles
Due to the hurricanes that ravaged the United States Gulf Coast this past year, many vehicles from that region are now flood-damaged beyond repair.

While SGI is not aware of any of these vehicles entering Saskatchewan, used vehicle buyers here should be aware there is a risk that flood-damaged vehicles will turn up in the Saskatchewan market.
