The Road Test

Most authorities agree that a road test is the best way to gauge a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely under varying road and traffic conditions. A road test is also effective in measuring someone’s understanding of the rules of the road.

When can you take a road test?
Once you have had your learner’s licence for a minimum of nine months, are at least 16 years of age and have completed an approved driver education course, you can take a road test. An appointment may be made prior to your 16th birthday.

Where are road tests offered?
Road tests are offered through SGI’s 12 district offices, as well at satellite offices in more than 50 smaller centres. To book an appointment in southern Saskatchewan, call toll free
1-800-667-5111. In northern Saskatchewan, call toll free
1-800-667-5105. If you are booking an appointment in Regina or Saskatoon, call 775-6174 (Regina) or 683-2320 (Saskatoon).

What do you need to book an appointment?
To book an appointment, you must obtain a receipt from a motor licence issuer and produce the receipt for each examination before the test is booked. You must also supply the receipt number and your driver’s licence (PIC) number at the time of booking.

What materials do you need to bring to the driver test?
You should bring your driver’s licence, your receipt and your driver education card to the driver test. If you do not have all three documents, the test may have to be rescheduled.

What happens if you don't attend your road test?
If you do not attend your test and do not cancel your appointment, you may have to wait four weeks for another appointment. However, your receipt is still valid, meaning you do not have to purchase a new one.

How can you prepare for your road test?
The best way to prepare for your road test is to get behind the wheel as often as possible with a supervising driver who has a valid driver’s licence and who is not a novice driver. It is important to practise driving the way you were taught by the driver educator. Make sure your signal lights, brake lights and horn are working properly. You must also have a valid licence plate on the back of your vehicle. Your road test can be refused if the vehicle you provide is unsafe or not equipped in accordance with the law.

Please refer to the Saskatchewan Driver’s Handbook for a complete list of the most common vehicle problems.

It is also a good idea to familiarize yourself with your vehicle (i.e., know where things are located, how to turn on the windshield wipers, defroster, emergency flashers, etc.).

How is the road test conducted?
Driver examiners are there to help. They know you’re a little nervous and will answer any questions you may have prior to the test.

All road tests are conducted fairly and the content of the test (the number of turns, stop signs, etc.) is consistent across the province. The duration of your road test may vary depending on traffic, weather conditions and other factors.
However, actual driving time is usually about 20 minutes. Remember to fasten your seatbelt and use your headlights, windshield wipers and defroster when conditions require them.

At the end of the road test, if you have nine demerits or fewer, you pass! Ten or more demerits means you need a little more practice and will need to try again. The driver examiner will explain any errors, suggest ways to correct them and give you a copy of your scoresheet.

What happens if you pass your road test?
Congratulations! All you have to do now is go to any SGI motor licence issuer and have your driver’s licence updated. Your new licence is not valid until you do this.

What happens if you don’t pass your road test?
Don’t panic! You’ll get another chance.

At the end of your test, you will receive a complete report that outlines areas where improvement is needed. There is a two-week learning period before you can take another road test. You must purchase another road test receipt prior to booking your next test. To speed things up, remember to bring your valid learner’s licence, driver education certificate and road test receipt.

The Saskatchewan Driver’s Handbook is a good source of information when you’re preparing for your test.

What happens if you don’t renew your driver’s licence for a certain period of time?
You are still able to renew your driver’s licence even if you have not renewed your licence for up to five years. If you have not renewed your driver’s licence for over five years, you will be required to complete all necessary testing.
