Driver Assessment Now Available in Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region
The Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region is pleased to announce the addition of a Driver Assessment Program (DAP) to provide services to individuals whose ability to drive may be affected by a medical condition, illness or injury. The program is made possible through the financial support of Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) and will serve the residents of Southern Saskatchewan.
Previously, all testing for Saskatchewan clients was conducted in Saskatoon.
“We are pleased to be able to offer a driver assessment service in Regina,” said Jan Besse, Executive Director, Neurosciences, Rehabilitation, and Long-term Care – Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region. “This service will be more convenient for residents in the southern part of the province.”
“SGI is very pleased to provide funding so that residents of southern Saskatchewan have easier access to this traffic safety program,” Minister responsible for SGI Glenn Hagel said. “This program is a proactive approach to ensuring motorists with medical issues have the skills to drive safely.”
Clients may be referred to the program by a doctor, therapist, SGI, or another third party, such as Workers Compensation Board. Clients may also call the program directly or be referred by a family member.
There are two parts to the assessment. The in-clinic assessment consists of:
- an interview to determine your medical and driving history, road knowledge and driving needs, and,
- a variety of special tests, which may include pencil and paper tasks, computer and video tests and a reaction timer.
Depending on the results, the client may be required to participate in an on-road assessment.
