SGI CANADA Charity Classic Kicks Off Its Final Year
Put your turkey back in the freezer and spend your Thanksgiving
watching world-class athletes heat up the ice in the 12th, and final,
SGI CANADA Charity Curling Classic.
"This year’s event features some of the top names in
curling, indicating the impressive reputation the Classic has earned
over the past 12 years. And even though it’s sad to see this
Thanksgiving tradition come to an end, we are giving curling fans
a weekend that they won’t soon forget," said Jon Schubert,
President of SGI CANADA.
The pool of 32 men’s teams competing for $60,000 in prize
money includes Canadian favourites like Guy Hemmings and Randy Ferbey,
as well as James Dryburgh from Sweden and Pete Fenson from the United
States, just to name a few.
The event also features the Women’s Challenge, a 16-team
triple knock out event offering $15,000 in prize money. The women’s
teams are also world-class competitors, with a number of names fans
will recognize, including Jackie Lockhart all the way from Sweden,
Cassie Johnson from the United States and fellow Canadians Jan Betker
and Michelle Englot.
Proceeds from the entire 2004 Charity Classic will go to help
the Saskatchewan chapter of the Children’s Wish Foundation.
Since 1993, the SGI CANADA Charity Classic has raised more than
$250,000 for local charities.
Charities that have benefited from the Classic include the Multiple
Sclerosis Society, the Saskatchewan Head Injury Association, the
Children’s Health Foundation, KidSport Saskatchewan, Kids
Help Phone and the Canadian Diabetes Association.
The Charity Classic is organized and staffed by volunteers. All
operating revenue is raised through ticket sales and sponsorship
from SGI CANADA brokers and business partners.
Both men’s and women’s curling action will begin Oct.
7 with the first draws taking place at 5:15 p.m. Curlers will be
competing at both the Agridome and the Tartan Curling Club.
Tickets are on sale now at SGI head office and at the doors of
the Agridome and Tartan Curling Club. A five-day pass is only $30
and a single day pass is $12. Both include parking and off-ice entertainment.
