NEW
PHOTO ID CARD BECOMES MANDATORY JUNE 1ST
Over
the past two years SGI has been phasing in
a new photo ID card that is part of a
Saskatchewan driver's licence. The new ID
becomes mandatory June 1, 2003.
"Many people think
because they have the old style photo ID
that they're covered. But, that is not the
case," said Crown
Investments Corporation Minister Maynard Sonntag. "Before June
1st, you'll need the annual paper certificate
and the new credit card style photo ID with
the Canadian flag on it. "
Over
515,000 drivers have their new photo ID card.
However, approximately 137,000
drivers have yet to get the new photo ID.
"Some
people have put off getting their photo to
a later date, but they're running out
of time," said Sonntag,
who got his picture taken today in Regina. "The process is
quick, easy and costs nothing, so drop
by and show us your smile."
People
can get their photo taken at any SGI motor
licence issuer at no cost. All you need
is two pieces of identification that show
your name, full date of birth and signature.
People who don't have the new photo ID
card should have theirs made soon to avoid
line-ups in May.
SGI is following the lead
of many other places in North America by introducing
a mandatory photo driver's licence for
Saskatchewan residents. Identification
theft is a growing problem and your driver's
licence is an important piece of identification.
The new photo ID is a much more secure way
to look after Saskatchewan's
driver's licence program.
It is also targeted
to help stop the problem of young people using
fake identification to purchase tobacco or
alcohol.

needs more information, they can call the SGI
