Law Enforcement and SGI Working to Make Roads Safer in Prince Albert
SGI is joining forces with other members of the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) to help improve safety on our province's roads.
STEP is a multi-agency committee dedicated to road safety in Saskatchewan. The committee meets twice a year to discuss traffic safety issues and traffic enforcement priorities, resulting in awareness campaigns, proposals for legislative change and safety blitzes. Members include law enforcement agencies across the province, the Department of Justice and SGI.
The Prince Albert Police Service and the RCMP, in conjunction with all enforcement agencies and SGI, will hold two safety checkstops today from 1 to 5 p.m.
Enforcement officers will be on the lookout for prohibited drivers and drivers engaging in high risk behaviours, like speeding and drinking and driving, as well as for vehicle equipment violations and mechanical deficiencies.
"We are pleased to have everyone involved with STEP here for the checkstops today. Hopefully, this blitz will serve as a reminder to drivers that safety should always be their top priority while behind the wheel," said Chief John Quinn of the Prince Albert Police Service.
Staff Sgt. Jimm Barr of the RCMP added, "We also want people to know that law enforcement personnel are actively enforcing our traffic safety laws not only during these blitzes, but year-round."
Law enforcement agencies involved in the safety checkstops included the RCMP, municipal police services, the CN Police and the provincial Highway Transport Patrol.
"Education combined with enforcement is proven to have a positive effect on peoples driving habits. SGI is committed to continuing education through public awareness campaigns, as well as to making educational resources available to police agencies to aid their enforcement efforts," said Alan Cockman, Vice President of the Saskatchewan Auto Fund.
Cockman said the checkstop is an example of the ongoing commitment SGI and provincial law enforcement agencies have to working together for safer roads in Saskatchewan.
