Charity Classic kicks off ninth year
This Thanksgiving weekend theres more to look forward to than turkey dinner. Its time once again for the SGI CANADA Charity Classic.
Curling fans will be treated to some world-class competition between some of the top mens and womens teams. The Classic has developed quite a reputation on the curling circuit and draws teams from around the world.
The pool of 32 mens teams competing for $60,000 in prize money includes Switzerlands Peter Lindholm and Scotlands Hammy McMillan. Theres also Canadian favourites like Guy Hemmings, Wayne Middaugh and Gerald Shymko, just to name a few.
This year also sees the return of the Casino Regina Womens Challenge, a 16-team triple knock out event offering $15,000 in prize money. The womens teams are also world-class competitors. The Rhona Martin rink from Scotland will be representing their country at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. As well, both former U.S. champion Amy Wright from Minnesota and Nicole Joraanstad from Wisconsin will take part in the U.S. curling trials for their chance to go to Salt Lake City. Add in Canadian favourites like returning Classic champ Patty Rocheleau and reigning provincial champion Michelle Ridgway, and youve got some great curling action.
But curling is not the only thing happening at the Charity Classic. For terrific off-ice entertainment, Classic Cheers in the AgEx Pavillion is the place to be. Fridays cabaret kicks off at 9 p.m. and features the music of Corner Stone. On Saturday night, the Kit Kat Club will have you dancing the night away to the hits of the 60s and 70s.
There are also opportunities to go home a winner even if youre not a curler. Raffle tickets, 50/50 tickets and parimutuels will all be available courtesy of this years charity, Kids Help Phone. In fact, proceeds from the entire 2001 Charity Classic will benefit Kids Help Phone, the only national, toll-free, confidential counselling service for children and youth. It is there for young people, 24-hours a day, every day of the year, in both English and French.
Since 1993, the SGI CANADA Charity Classic has raised close to $150,000 for local charities. The Charity Classic is organized and staffed by volunteers. All operating revenue is raised through ticket sales and sponsorship from SGI CANADA brokers and business partners. Both mens and womens curling action will begin Oct. 4. Curlers will be competing at both the Agridome and the Tartan Curling Club.
Tickets are on sale now at SGI head office, Regina SGI Claims branches, participating SGI CANADA brokers offices and at the doors of the Agridome and Tartan Curling Club. A five-day pass is only $30 and a single day pass is $12. Both include parking and great off-ice entertainment.
