Enforcement Overdrive Statistics (Regina Police Service News Release)
Statistics are now available for the first four months of Enforcement Overdrive, a 12-month pilot project that focuses on reducing impaired driving. Enforcement Overdrive is a project of the Regina Police Service, in partnership with SGI.
The main objective of Enforcement Overdrive is to enable the Regina Police Service to operate additional roadside check stops focused on drinking and driving in 2001. These check stops are operated by the Regina Police Service on an overtime basis (meaning over and above regular-duty enforcement), with funding for the staffing costs provided by SGI.
In the period from Jan. 1, 2001 to April 30, 2001 a total of 5,839 vehicles were checked. The majority of drivers were found to be abiding by the laws. A small percentage of these drivers were, however, found to be drinking. As a result, 83 impaired drivers were taken off our roads - all 83 were issued 24-hour suspensions and 14 were charged with impaired driving.
Enforcement Overdrive will continue to augment regular traffic enforcement with its program of strategically located roadside check stops throughout 2001. The ultimate goal of Enforcement Overdrive is to enhance public safety not only by taking impaired drivers off our roads, but also by preventing impaired driving through raising awareness of this increased enforcement.
