Community grants application reminder

Children at the K’wasis Day Care Centre on Cowessess First Nation are now travelling a lot safer on field trips. With funds from an SGI Community Grant, the day care centre purchased 13 new child booster seats for their small clients.

"We want to ensure that our children are safe, and a community grant from SGI is helping us to do just that," said Kelly Fremont, child care worker at the day care centre. "We were able to purchase several different kinds of booster seats to use when we take the children on trips away from the day care centre."

"As more people are becoming aware of the importance of properly restraining children when travelling, more groups and individuals are coming to us for help with purchasing and installing the equipment. We are pleased to be able to help through community grants," said Shannon Ell, SGI’s Supervisor of Traffic Safety Promotion.

The K’wasis Day Care Centre was just one of 118 groups in Saskatchewan that applied for the latest round of Community Grants. In May, SGI and the Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Partnership Project awarded 63 grants totalling $60,000.

Many communities across the province have benefited from the community grants awarded twice a year since the program’s inception in 1997. Among the groups that have benefited from grants awarded in 2000 include Fond du Lac RCMP, which will use its grant to purchase a Fatal Vision Starter Kit for its alcohol and drug awareness program, and the City of Saskatoon Traffic Safety Committee, which will use its grant to help implement and advertise its "Walk a Child to School" campaign.

Grants are awarded to groups based on a set of criteria that must be met before applications will be considered. Initiatives must address SGI traffic safety or ABI program priorities. There must also be a need in the community for the project.

The second set of community grants for 2000 will be awarded in December. Application deadline is October 31. For more information on eligibility criteria on grant applications or to receive an application, contact Shannon Ell at (306) 775-6179.
