Positive reviews for SGI's used vehicle information initiative

It's been eight months since SGI implemented a new customer service initiative that provides information on the history of used vehicles to the public. The service is growing in popularity and is receiving positive reviews from customers.

"Since the program was implemented on May 18, we've received 7,654 inquiries from the public," said Garry McConnell, Manager, Customer Information Services, Auto Fund. "Of those customers who have used the service, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. People are telling us it's a great help having a quick and easy way to check on the status of a used vehicle, before they purchase it. It's giving them peace of mind."

For a $10 fee, a customer can make a request for information on a used vehicle at any SGI motor licence issuer. All a customer needs is the vehicle serial number. Then, SGI will search the databases of jurisdictions across Canada for information on that vehicle, and pass along any results found to the customer. On average, the search takes 30 minutes. For auto dealers and auctioneers with large requests, turnaround is three working days, providing the other jurisdictions are available.

The search provides information on whether a vehicle is eligible for registration in Saskatchewan and any other recorded information available from other jurisdictions, including:

• whether a vehicle has a total loss, rebuilt, non-repairable or stolen status in any Canadian jurisdiction;

• whether there is a record of the vehicle being registered in another jurisdiction;

• whether the vehicle must be inspected before being registered in Saskatchewan;

• whether E&H tax is payable.

To protect individuals' privacy, no names or other information on current or past vehicle owners are passed along.

"The entire history of a used vehicle may not always be available, as some jurisdictions do not have as comprehensive a database as others," McConnell said. "However, SGI will always ensure a comprehensive search is completed, and pass along all the information that we can find."
