SGI and members of IBAS launch Child Restraint safety campaign

Deputy Premier and Crown Investments Corporation Minister Dwain Lingenfelter today announced the kick-off of the annual child restraint safety campaign.

"Parents are always concerned about the safety of their children, but installing a child restraint in a vehicle is not as easy as it appears," Lingenfelter said. "Only 50 per cent of the children in Saskatchewan are properly restrained while riding in a vehicle. An inspection at a clinic is the best way to ensure your child is riding safely. That is why SGI is working with members of the Insurance Brokers Association of Saskatchewan (IBAS) and the Saskatchewan Safety Council to host free child restraint clinics in communities throughout the province."

The campaign is being launched with a clinic on May 1, 1999 at the parking lot of Victoria Square Mall in Regina. Inspectors will go over each vehicle, the child restraint being used and the particular needs of each child in attendance at the drive-through clinic.

Barbara Ricard, President, IBAS, and co-owner of Kelly Insurance, Kindersley said, "As an added incentive for parents who attend the child restraint clinics I'm proud to announce that IBAS is sponsoring a contest. It's called One Safe Trip Deserves Another and offers everyone who attends a clinic the opportunity to enter a draw for a $4,000 family travel voucher. The winner will be selected through a random draw and announced by Oct. 31, 1999."

More than 60 clinics are in the works for communities across the province this summer and that number is expected to grow. The Child Restraint Campaign runs from now through to the end of September. Attached is a list of confirmed clinic dates and locations. People are encouraged to watch their local newspapers for times, dates and locations of child restraint clinics in their community.

Anyone interested in organizing a child restraint clinic in their community should contact their local SGI CANADA broker or the Saskatchewan Safety Council at (306) 757-3197.
