Back-to-school bike safety
Whether a child is riding their bike to school or just for fun with friends, these basic guidelines will help keep them safe:
- Wear a bicycle helmet. A properly fitted helmet helps protect the brain from absorbing the force from a collision, decreasing the risk of a serious head injury by up to 85%.
- Ride a bike that fits. When standing, the child should be able to stand over the top tube of the bicycle with both feet on the ground. When seated, they should be able to put their tiptoes on the ground.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night. If someone in a car cannot see the rider, they are at a higher risk of being injured.
- Hand signals let cars and people know what the rider plans to do, reducing driver confusion and possible collisions. Study bicycle hand signals and use them on the road.
- Stop at the end of alleyways and before crossing the street.
